Cheesy Jalapeño Makhana Snack Mix for Movie Nights

Festive season means guests, late-night movies and a constant craving for something crunchy. This cheesy jalapeño makhana snack mix is our answer: light, golden and ready in about ten minutes, with just a handful of ingredients.

Why makhana?

Makhana (fox nuts or lotus seeds) is a pantry favourite in Indian homes. It's airy, naturally mild and a brilliant blank canvas for seasoning. Once roasted, it turns wonderfully crisp, and it soaks up flavour far better than most snacks.

The star: a two-flavour seasoning duo

For this recipe we're reaching for the Cheese Jalapeño & Cheese Herbs Seasoning Combo (100g + 100g). The jalapeño blend brings a gentle, tangy heat, while the cheese and herbs blend adds a mellow, savoury note. Mixing the two gives you a snack with layers: spicy first, creamy and herby after.

What you'll need

  • 2 cups makhana (fox nuts)
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or olive oil
  • 1 cup roasted peanuts or mixed nuts
  • 1/2 cup thin poha or puffed rice (optional, for extra crunch)
  • 1 teaspoon Cheese Jalapeño seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Cheese & Herbs seasoning
  • A pinch of salt, to taste

Method

  1. Dry roast the makhana. Heat a wide pan on low-medium. Add the makhana and roast for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring often, until they feel crisp and snap easily when pressed. Take your time; under-roasted makhana turns chewy.
  2. Toast the extras. Move the makhana to a bowl. In the same pan, warm the nuts and poha for two minutes until fragrant.
  3. Add the fat. Return everything to the pan, drizzle in the ghee and toss on low heat for 30 seconds so each piece gets a light coating. This helps the seasoning cling.
  4. Season off the heat. Turn off the flame, sprinkle both seasonings and a pinch of salt, then toss well. Taste and adjust.
  5. Cool and store. Let the mix cool completely before putting it in an airtight jar. It stays crunchy for about a week.

Tips for the best crunch

Always season while the makhana is warm but off the flame, so the powder sticks without burning. Add the seasoning in small pinches rather than all at once; you can always add more. If you prefer a fiery mix, use two parts jalapeño to one part herbs. For a milder bowl for kids, flip the ratio.

Ways to serve it

Spoon it into small bowls for a Diwali get-together, pack it into jars as a homemade gift, or keep a tin on your desk for afternoon cravings. It also works beautifully sprinkled over a salad as a crunchy topper, or tossed with freshly popped popcorn for a double-crunch situation.

A little gifting idea

Fill a glass jar with the finished mix, tie on a ribbon and add a handwritten note. It's a thoughtful, low-effort gift for neighbours and colleagues this season, and the two-seasoning combo means you can make a couple of batches without running out.

Give it a try this weekend, and tell us how you made it your own. Happy snacking from all of us at Masala Potli!
